One thing that the New Year brings on is the desire to get organized, or reorganized, as the case may be. Managing your business depends a great deal on time management. If you are not managing your time efficiently you will tend to have lack of focus, scattered energy, projects never get completed, lack of follow-through, and not honoring commitments.

And are you treating them as such? For a long time, I resisted a cell phone, desiring to preserve the simplicity of my life for as long as possible. Until very recently, I resisted upgrading to a smart phone, and even now, I still have not enabled texting on my phone. While standing on the outside looking in, it saddened me to see people at the mercy of advancing technology.

Did you know, according to Time Management Expert Dr. Don Wetmore, “The average person gets 1 interruption every 8 minutes, or approximately 7 an hour, or 50-60 per day. The average interruption takes 5 minutes, totaling about 4 hours or 50% of the average workday. 80% of those interruptions are typically rated as ‘little value’ or ‘no value’ creating approximately 3 hours of wasted time per day.” No wonder we often feel like our day is spinning out-of-control. Today, concentrate on dealing with these distractions proactively. Handle the distractions, don’t let them handle you.

According to the old adage, “If you want something done right, do it yourself.” On the other hand, “Don’t spread yourself too thin.” So what is a busy person to do? Clearly, you can’t do everything yourself. There’s not enough time in the day, week, month, or year. In order to relieve the stress of your ever-increasing workload, you decide to delegate. But delegation itself, if not done properly can actually add to the burdens of the delegator and increase the stress levels of the person being delegated to.

Do you ever feel like there just isn’t enough time to do everything you need or want to do? Do you look around and wonder why some people seem to have more hours in the day than you do? The answer is one of two things. Either they work more hours or they use their hours more efficiently. Since the first is not a great long-term strategy (it will eventually impact performance and stress levels), we’ll concentrate on the second.
